BECOME A TUTOR

How does an adult in Wake County go about enrolling to become a Volunteer Tutor for the Literacy Council?

Download the forms and information from our website, give us a call or stop by our office! We are happy to speak with you about what is involved in becoming a volunteer tutor.

We estimate that last year our supporters volunteered about 7,000 hours of their time. If you are over the age of 18 with good reading skills, patience and a commitment to helping another adult achieve his or her goals, we can train you to be a tutor. Once trained and matched with a student/class you must meet twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half each time. Students and tutors may meet in public libraries, coffee shops or any other public location that is convenient.

To become a tutor, you will need to complete a 12-hour training workshop. Workshops are usually held once a month at the Literacy Council office (link to our address and map)- either in the evening or during the day. The cost for the workshop is typically $35*, which covers materials and a textbook that the trainee will be able to keep. Because space is limited in each workshop, the registration fee is non-refundable and we must receive your application and fee to reserve your spot.  To register for the workshop, you will need to do the following:

*Please note that there is a separate application to become a tutor for the Juvenile Literacy Center. This application can be downloaded here

FURTHER EXPLANATION OF WORKSHOP FEES

The Literacy Council of Wake County offers a 12-hour workshop to train its volunteer tutors in both Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. Once matched with a student successfully for one month tutors are certified by Pro-Literacy International. These workshops are scheduled monthly, and are designed primarily for the training of volunteers who will work with LCWC clients. While we welcome other individuals and organizations to complete our training, we have established two levels of workshop fees. These fees are as follows

$35 - LCWC tutors

The $35 non-refundable fee is standard for individual volunteers who plan to tutor an LCWC client. Clients are those who present themselves to the Literacy Council of Wake County for literacy instruction, and are formally assessed by the Council.

$250 - Non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, local, state, or federal government agencies, businesses or other individuals

The $250 fee will be charged for individuals who are interested in the workshop, but will not be tutoring LCWC clients. These could be individuals sent for training by non-profit organizations, local, state or federal government agencies, individuals working with their own clientele or for the benefit of a for-profit business.  Priority will be given to tutors working with LCWC clients.  If you have any questions regarding workshop fees, please contact us by email or at 787-5559.
